Physiotherapists use acupuncture to reduce pain and therefore allow normal movement and function to be restored.
Acupuncture can be used to treat most of the conditions that Physiotherapists would treat with other methods, such as muscular and skeletal pain of the back, neck, or joints. Acupuncture can also be used in the treatment of pain from arthritis, sciatica or headaches.
Does acupuncture hurt?
The needles used are extremely narrow and often the patient cannot feel the needles being applied or removed. Some patients feel mild discomfort as the needles are applied, but this is short lived. A slight tingle can be felt while the needles are in place.
Please ask your physiotherapist if you wish to have acupuncture, as they will need to ask you some specific questions about any medication you might be taking.
